The 2007 Indoor Aerial Robot Competition focuses on gust stabilization.  In this years competition, the blimp must hover over a target for 30 sec under varying gust conditions, depicted below:  

 

The competition will consist of 3 rounds with varying gust conditions as follows:

Round 1

5sec burst of low speed, steady flow

Round 2

Continuous low speed, steady flow

Round 3

Continuous low speed, unsteady flow

Points will be allotted based on how far the blimp strays from the center of the target during the 30 sec period.  Remaining within the red ring scores the highest number of points.  Remaining within the green ring scores the second highest number of points, while remaining within the blue ring scores the least points.  The point break down is as follows:

Rules and Regulations

  1. The blimp will start at the center of the target.
  2. Human intervention is not allowed.
  3. The blimp must hover no more than 8 ft above the target to score.
  4. Hovering is defined as remaining airborne without coming into contact with anything (e.g. ground, fan, wall, etc.).
  5. The blimp must stay fully contained (e.g. no parts may detach).

Competition Layout

The diagram above depicts the competition layout.  The red circle is 6 ft. in diameter, the green 10 ft. in diameter, and the blue 14 ft. in diameter.  A white fiducial will mark the center of the target.  The fans will be placed approx. 14 ft. from the center of the target.

Gust: 3 fans will be used to generate gust. The fan that will be used in the competition is bought from Walmart. It's manufacturer is Lasko.
